Cognipole

This project aims at identifying variations in cognitive performance during the Antarctic overwintering period. Differences might take the form of decrements, but also of strategic shifts in cognitive control, that could have an adaptative function. Performance will be assessed through a battery of cognitive task tapping on a range of functions from simple stimulus detection to attention and decision making. The assessment of sleep quality and circadian rhytmicity will allow to identify whether previously described disturbances are replicated here, and how these relate to the quality of cognitive performance. Psychophysiological measurement of CNS and ANS activity will provide insights to the mechanisms of these changes and the neural and cognitive subsystems involved.

The study is sponsored by the European Space Agency, the Belgian Science Policy.
